Orissa is a pioneer in
Joint Forest
Management (JFM)
and the first Government
Resolution formalising JFM was issued in 1988. It has involved the
local villagers in protection and management of degraded forests.
Vana Sarakhayana Samitis
(VSS) have been constituted in all the Territorial Divisions of the
state as per Government Resolution. Till the end of December
2006, 10140 VSS and 291 nos of EDC have been constituted and are
actively involved in the protection and management of 9160sq km of
degraded forest
