Kendu Leaf Trade offers one of the largest employment opportunities
in rural Orissa. The Kendu Leaf Organisation has opened 7882 Nos. of
phadis in different districts of the State for purchase of the K.L.
collected by the villagers. For storage of the processed and phal
K.L Bags 988 numbers of K.L. Central Godowns has been established
in the State
During 2003-2004 (2003 crop year), the target of Kendu Leaf out put
was 4.85 lakh quintals, against which the production achieved is
4.77 lakh quintals. 9.50 lakh pluckers have been benefited for
collection of K.L during the season. In addition Bush Cutting, Phadi
repair, processing and binding of K.L etc. during the season wages
of the order of 65 lakh person days have been generated. During 2004
crop year, the production target has been projected at 4.75 lakh
quintals. The price offered for Kendu leaf has been revised since
last year with 21 paise per 20 leaves . Food commodities of 2882 M.T
have been distributed as an incentive to the binding labourers
during the year under the World Food Programme. For enhanced
transparency with the operations at all stages, phadi committees
have been organized and activated for each of the 7,882 collection
centers. An amount of Rs.3.00 crores have been sanctioned for supply
of chapal to pluckers for protection from scorching heat.
